How much does a panel upgrade cost in Austin?

Most Austin homeowners pay $1,800 to $3,200 to upgrade from a 100-amp to a 200-amp panel. The price depends on three things: the size of the new panel, whether the meter base has to move, and how much work Austin Energy has to do on their side.

Typical prices

  • Same-size panel replacement: $1,400 to $2,000
  • 100A to 200A upgrade: $1,800 to $3,200
  • Upgrade that also moves the meter: $3,000 to $4,500

What raises the price

  • Moving the panel to a new wall
  • Old aluminum branch wiring that needs repair
  • A new service line from the pole
  • Adding surge protection or a subpanel at the same time

Do you need an upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. A load calculation often shows that a 100-amp panel can take a 40-amp charger circuit, especially in homes with gas heat. We run the calculation before we quote an upgrade.
